What Is Acemannan?

Mouth Ulcers (Canker Sores)
A randomized controlled clinical trial compared a topical acemannan preparation with a standard steroid treatment and a placebo gel for recurrent aphthous ulcers. The acemannan group showed improvement in ulcer size and pain compared with placebo, though the steroid performed better overall. Short-term safety testing in participants did not show significant side effects in that study period.

Dental and Bone Healing Applications
Several dental surgery studies have examined acemannan placed into tooth extraction or surgical bone sites.
In controlled clinical studies using 3D imaging follow-up, acemannan sponges or materials were associated with greater early bone fill and socket healing compared with control in the first few months.

Acemannan and Cancer

In animal tumor models, acemannan has been shown to activate macrophages and increase signaling molecules such as nitric oxide and cytokines that are involved in immune defense, and some mouse studies reported reduced tumor growth or improved survival when acemannan was used as an immune stimulant alongside other treatments. Veterinary studies in dogs and cats with certain tumors, including fibrosarcomas, have also examined acemannan as a supportive therapy combined with surgery or radiation, with some reported benefit in outcomes. More recent cell and animal research on Aloe-derived acemannan polysaccharides continues to investigate anticancer and immune-modulating effects. That said, human clinical evidence using isolated acemannan for cancer treatment is still limited, so it is best described as a compound with promising early-stage and adjunct-support potential rather than a proven cancer therapy.
Inflammatory and Tissue Signaling Research
Cell studies using human tissue models, including gum fibroblast cells, have found that acemannan can influence inflammatory signaling pathways and cytokine expression in controlled lab environments.
Again, this is mechanism research, not proof of clinical effect — but it helps explain why acemannan is of scientific interest.
Is Acemannan the Same as Aloe Juice
No. This is a common misunderstanding.
Aloe juice products vary widely. Some contain very little active polysaccharide content. Acemannan supplements are typically:
- standardized
- purified
- tested for polysaccharide levels
- processed to remove irritating components
So while acemannan comes from aloe vera, not every aloe product delivers meaningful amounts of acemannan.
