Cleaning Hacks for Busy Moms: 5 ADHD Friendly Tricks That Actually Work

Confession: I’m not a naturally clean person.
I have ADHD. I’m a full-time teacher. I’m a mom to two young kids. And I have approximately zero time to deep-clean anything. But here’s the thing- I love living in a clean house. I firmly believe everyone’s brain works better in a tidy space. It’s not that I don’t want a spotless home, it’s just that I rarely have the time, energy, or mental bandwidth to keep it that way 24/7.

Over the past few years (a.k.a. since becoming a parent), I’ve discovered a handful of tools and tricks that help me stay on top of the chaos, or at least keep it from swallowing me whole. Nothing Pinterest-perfect here, just real-life mom hacks that make cleaning slightly more manageable and occasionally enjoyable. If you’re feeling buried under toys, crumbs, and laundry piles, maybe one of these will help.

1. This Cordless Vacuum Changed My Life

Levoit LVAC-200 Cordless Vacuum

Let’s just say I’ve never found a vacuum I liked. They are heavy, annoying to store, and complicated to figure out. I wanted to love the Dyson. I really did. But it constantly clogged, the suction was underwhelming, and cleaning it out felt like a full-time job. (Also, I didn’t splurge on the fancy cordless model. I had the beast with the annoying cord. Not fun.)

Enter: the Levoit LVAC-200. I must be very late to the game because this little machine is the easiest thing ever to use, so simple in design, and does a better job better than the massive Dyson ever did.

Why it’s my #1 cleaning MVP:

  • Not expensive
  • Shockingly strong suction for how lightweight it is
  • Works great on both carpet and hardwood
  • Weighs just 3 pounds and easy to carry while balancing a toddler on your hip
  • Battery lasts up to 45 minutes
  • Empties in seconds with a super simple filter system

This vacuum has actually made it, dare I say enjoyable to do a quick sweep under the table after dinner or run it down the hallway during those rare five-minute windows when the kids are semi-occupied. Highly recommend.

2. My Non-Toxic Must-Have: Branch Basics

If I could only keep one cleaning product in the house, it would be Branch Basics hands down.

I use it for everything: windows, counters, bathroom grime, highchair trays, laundry, even tough stains (shoutout to the Oxy Boost, which works actual magic on gross toddler messes and mystery smudges). It’s completely non-toxic, which matters a lot when you’ve got little humans crawling, climbing, and licking every surface in your home.

Why I’m obsessed:

  • You only buy one concentrate. You just mix it with water in different ratios depending on the task. One bottle of concentrate lasts forever and replaces dozens of store-bought cleaners—so it saves money and space.
  • The system is super simple. It comes with labeled bottles for All-Purpose, Bathroom, Streak-Free (for glass and mirrors), Laundry, and Foaming Wash. Each one tells you exactly how much concentrate to add, so you don’t have to think, just fill and go.
  • It actually works. I’ve tried a lot of “natural” cleaners that looked nice but didn’t do much. Branch Basics cuts through grease, grime, toothpaste explosions, and sticky kid spills without harsh fumes or sketchy ingredients.
  • Fragrance-free and truly clean. No artificial scents, no hidden chemicals, and nothing you have to worry about spraying near your baby, your dog, or your cutting board.

I especially love that it’s a refillable system. Once you have the bottles, you just reorder the concentrate and Oxy Boost when you run out. It’s low-waste, low-effort, and kind of fun to use like a science experiment that leaves your house sparkling.

If cleaning hasn’t exactly been your love language lately (same), this is one of those simple swaps that makes the job a little less dreadful and a lot more doable.

3. My Swiffer Hack: No More Refills Ever

Raise your hand if you’ve spent too much on those disposable Swiffer pads 🙋‍♀️.
My hack? I use old burp cloths as Swiffer pads. I know it sounds ridiculous but it really works and is so quick and easy. I stick them into the mop just like the real thing, pour a little Branch Basics all-purpose on the floor, and swipe away. When I’m done I just throw it into the washing machine.

This hack is:

  • Budget-friendly
  • Eco-conscious
  • Way more effective than those dry cloths, in my opinion

Perfect for those in-between deep cleans when you just need the floors not to be sticky.

4. Toy Bin For Each Kid = Instant Tidy (Even If Nothing Is Actually Organized)

My secret to a living room that doesn’t look like a daycare exploded? Personal toy bins.

Each of my kids has their own labeled bin in their bedroom, plus we keep one big communal bin in the living room. That’s it. That’s the system.

I gave up trying to perfectly sort every tiny toy into its proper category a long time ago. These days, I aim for functional over flawless. About once every 2–3 weeks, I do a full sort and return everything to its “rightful” place (or close enough). But in the meantime? When it’s time to clean up, the kids just toss all the random bits into their bin. If they want it again, they know where to find it.

Yes, the toddler dumps the entire bin almost every time she plays, but she’s also getting pretty good at putting it all back when we clean up. So for now? It’s working.

Bonus clean-up hack:
We make it a race. Who can fill their bin the fastest? Turning clean-up time into a quick, silly competition works almost every time…even when they’re tired, cranky, or deep in their chaos.

At night, I toss each kid’s bin back into their room, and in the morning, we start the mess all over again.

5. The 5-Minute Room Reset Trick

Another little secret that’s keeping my house from turning into a full-blown disaster zone? The 5-minute cleanup.

This trick works wonders for me and the kids. If I tell them it’s time for a massive clean-up, I’m met with groans, whining, and sudden claims of exhaustion. But if I say, “Let’s just do five minutes real quick,” they’re instantly more willing to help. Five minutes feels manageable, doable, not overwhelming and let’s be honest, that’s half the battle.

I set a timer, throw on a fun song (or two), and we race the clock. It becomes a little challenge instead of a chore. My daughter actually loves doing this with me. It turns into a mini dance party with a side of productivity. Sometimes I’ll say, “Let’s see how clean we can get the living room before the song ends!” and she’s instantly on board.

And here’s the thing: you’d be shocked what five focused minutes can do.

Whether it’s picking up toys, wiping counters, or vacuuming up a mystery crumb explosion, five intentional minutes with the right tools, our trusty cordless vacuum, Branch Basics, and a couple toy bins is often enough to make a huge difference.

When I’m tired, overstimulated, or short on time (so, basically always), this mindset keeps me from spiraling. Can I clean the whole house today? Nope. But can I clean one room for five minutes? Absolutely.

It’s about progress, not perfection, and sometimes that’s all it takes to reset the space and my mood.

Clean(ish) Is Good Enough

If you’re like me and cleaning isn’t your strong suit, give yourself grace. A clean(ish) house is still a warm, safe, happy one. These tools and tricks have helped me reduce my mental load without spending hours scrubbing baseboards. And that’s enough for now. I hope one of these helps you if you are struggling with keeping the house clean, too.

Let’s not lose our minds together,

Tori
